The study abroad guide to spending less

One mantra to remember: the United States is definitely not the most expensive country on the planet, which means studying abroad might cost more than staying home. Still, there are ways to cut your costs:

Study somewhere unique

Europe is beautiful, but it's not cheap. Consider studying in Central or South America, Africa, or parts of Asia.

Get an ISIC Card

This card is an international standard and can save you tons of money on hotels, tours, historical sites, transportation costs, museum tickets, and even restaurants. Once you have the card, show it everywhere you go.

Compare flights—and buy way in advance

Use sites like Kayak, Mobissimo, and BT-Store to compare tickets. Also consider flying the national carrier of your host country. It might cost less.

Shop local

While import stores may carry your favorite foods from home, they're going to cost more. Indulge in local eats instead. Not only will it save you cash, but otherwise you'll be missing one of the greatest facets of traveling abroad: eating new and unusual foods.

Forget international cell phones

Use Skype™ instead.

Tip of the week
The Pulitzer Prize-winning author James Albert Michener once said of travel:

"If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion, and avoid the people, you might better stay at home." What's that mean for your study abroad? Sink into it. Make local friends. Don't avoid what scares you.
