Having more starts with saving more

Summer is expensive. You need to go on vacation. You need to hang with friends, live large day-to-day, and regularly binge eat ice cream. And let's get real: you're probably going to buy at least one inflatable pool toy. But do those things while watching your wallet to make sure you don't spend more than you earn this summer. Here's how:

Save more

Saving cash doesn't happen accidentally. Designate a large portion of each paycheck and never touch it. Send it straight to the bank.

Vacation cheaply

Summer is a good time to hit the beach. And go to dinner. And rent a cabin. And rent a boat. But if you indulge like that, you may discover you have less money at the end of summer than you did at the beginning. Avoid it by vacationing in groups, splitting costs, or having fun closer to home.

Work for tips

Why bind yourself to a low hourly wage when you could turn on the charm and rake in tips? Think summer specific employment: restaurants with decks or patios, gourmet ice cream shops, and bartending are all good ways to make a little more.

Freelance

Think of ways to earn more even if you've already got a day job. Mow lawns on the weekend. Tutor younger students that are in summer school. And apply for more scholarships.
