| Weird ways to celebrate the greenest day of the year St. Patrick's Day started as a feast day to celebrate Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. Since then it has evolved into a largely secular holiday recognizing Irish culture, leprechauns, and (of course) green beer. But people all over the planet celebrate strangely by: Watching the shortest St. Patrick's Day parade in the world Coincidentally, it takes place on the world's shortest street. That'd be Bridge Street, in Hot Springs, Arkansas. It's only about 175 feet long. Dyeing the Chicago River green The dye is relatively harmless, at least when compared to sewage. The resident turtles are already green so they don't mind, but there's still no word yet on how the fish and beavers feel. Chugging Guinness Worldwide consumption of that Irish beer more than doubles on St. Patrick's Day, to 13 million pints. Visiting the Irish capital of Nebraska The town of O'Neill (so rightfully named) paints the world's largest shamrock in the middle of town. There's also a dramatic reading of Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham. Making an extra (or early) payment on your student loan Maybe this isn't a tradition...yet. But it should be. Why? Because it'll save you money in the long run, and what could honor Saint Patrick more than a little extra green? |
