NTEN: The Nonprofit Technology Network

Hi Quipi,

I'd like to tell you why I believe technology can change the world.

To be clear, though, this is a fundraising message. The generosity of spirit of the NTEN community has helped us raise $10,547 to convene more local gatherings in 2012, but we still have a ways to go to reach our goal of $15,000 by December 31st.

> Please make a gift to support nonprofit technology in 2012.

If you've read a couple of our messages, it probably comes as no surprise that I've always been a bit of a geek – I saved up to buy my first computer when I was 12, hand-coded my first web site in 1995 – but it wasn't until I worked in Africa that I truly understood the power of technology to create societal change.

My wife and I lived at a dusty intersection of two unpaved streets in Kayes, Mali. Just up one of them, a few squat concrete shops sat boarded up – except, every now and then, a crowd would start to gather, eventually filling most of the street. When a truck full of merchandise pulled up, it was a surprise only to us.

The truck drivers had used their cell phones to get the word out to their networks via text message as they approached the city.

During our time in Africa, mobile phones became ubiquitous. Bypassing untenably expensive wired infrastructure, cell coverage kept families connected and changed the way business was conducted in a matter of years instead of decades. It was a heck of a thing to witness.

I could go on, but I think you already know: technology can change the world, often in ways we can't foresee. It's only through working together, sharing insights and building communities of peers, that we can harness technology effectively to create the change we want to see in the world.

That's what we try to do here at NTEN, and we want to do more of it in 2012. Support our work today and your donation will go twice as far, thanks to a matching grant by the NTEN board.

Please take one minute now to make a donation and show your support for the nonprofit technology community.

Thank you for all that you've done, and all that you're going to do, to make the world a better place.

Brett
