World-leading electricity companies commit support to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Sustainable Energy for All initiative at Rio+20

June 17, 2012 – Today, at the United Nations Global Compact’s Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum, the Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership (GSEP) participated in a panel discussion on "Mobilizing Action and Partnership Around High Impact Opportunities". During her presentation, the Executive Director of the GSEP announced the organization’s commitments to the UN SE4ALL initiative:

  1. Provision of 50,000 solar lanterns that will increase access to clean electricity to off-grid households in partnership with the Global BrightLight Foundation through a pay as you go program;
  2. Expansion of its current capacity-building workshops in developing and emerging countries aimed at transferring business know-how and expertise in electrification projects to help develop local capacities; 
  3. Funding for the development of the Electrification Roadmaps for Southern Africa and other underserved areas of the world.
