Are online degrees worth the cost?

A lot of people have a lot of things to say about the value of an online education. Thankfully we're here to help you sort through the fluff and get to the meat of it: is an online degree worth the cost to you? The answer, inevitably, is maybe. But there are steps you can take to increase the value of your education:

Proper accreditations are essential

Regional and national accreditations carry a lot of weight, so if your school isn't accredited, your degree might not have the value you're paying for.

Take solace in the statistics

Let's face it. Times change. And online education is fast becoming the norm instead of the exception.

  • According to the Babson Survey Group and the College Board, online enrollment in online degree programs is growing five times faster than the overall higher education student population.
  • Nearly a third of all college students take at least one course online.
  • According to the Pew Research Center, over half of college presidents think online education offers a value equivalent to traditional classrooms, whereas only 29% of the public agree. That means you're probably getting a better education than your friends think you are.

Know what online schools are good at

In a Harvard study based on data from the US Department of Education, for-profit schools, many of which are online, were shown to be more successful at graduating students from short-term programs. However, online graduates in traditional fields of study are less likely to be employed and have lower earnings than comparable students graduating from non-profit institutions.

Tip of the week
It's easy to spot phony degree programs.

The US Department of Education keeps a database of accredited institutions, so make sure your school is on the list. Also, when searching for schools, keep an eye out for phrases like "Guaranteed Degree" and "NO GPA Scores Required", or any other phrases promising that you'll graduate or that it will be easy.
