The Wall Street Journal has done us all a huge favor by ranking college majors based on what kind of employment opportunities they guarantee and what kind of salaries they fetch. Here are some highlights:

Highest median earnings
  • Engineering: mid-$60,000 up to $127,000, depending on specialty. Petroleum and nuclear engineers are on top of that spectrum. Mechanical engineers are not.
  • Pharmacy science and admin: $105,000
  • Computer science: $91,000
  • Information science: $71,000
  • Economics: $69,000
Lowest median earnings
  • Student counseling/educational psychology: $20,000-$35,000
  • Visual and performing arts: $36,000
  • Library science: $36,000
  • Early childhood education: $37,000
  • Studio arts: $37,000
Most popular (by enrollment) with median earnings
  • Business management: $56,000
  • General business: $59,000
  • Accounting: $61,000
  • Nursing: $60,000
  • Psychology: $43,000

Tip of the week
Online education has a growth rate of about 21%.

That's according to Education Today, and starkly contrasts the growth rate of traditional education, which they claim is 1.8%. At that rate, online education could quickly become the new "normal."
