How the Scientific Community Reacts to Newly Submitted Preprints: Article Downloads, Twitter Mentions, and Citations
Xin Shuai, Alberto Pepe, and Johan Bollen
arXiv.org > cs > arXiv:1202.2461, (11 Feb 2012)
Abstract: We analyze the online response of the scientific community to the preprint publication of scholarly articles. We employ a cohort of 4,606 scientific articles submitted to the preprint database arXiv.org between October 2010 and April 2011. We study three forms of reactions to these preprints: how they are downloaded on the arXiv.org site, how they are mentioned on the social media site Twitter, and how they are cited in the scholarly record. We perform two analyses. First, we analyze the delay and time span of article downloads and Twitter mentions following submission, to understand the temporal configuration of these reactions and whether significant differences exist between them. Second, we run correlation tests to investigate the relationship between Twitter mentions and both article downloads and article citations. We find that Twitter mentions follow rapidly after article submission and that they are correlated with later article downloads and later article citations, indicating that social media may be an important factor in determining the scientific impact of an article.

Indian institutional repositories: a study of user's perspective
Sarika Sawant
Program: electronic library and information systems 46 (1), 92-122 (2012)
(Subscription required.) From the Abstract: The present study aims to investigate the experience, contribution and opinions of users of respective institutional repositories (IRs) developed in India. It was observed that 85.94 percent of respondents (154) were aware of the IR facility/service and 14.05 percent (26) were not aware of IR. More than half of the respondents, i.e. 52.43 percent (97), learned about the IR service through links provided on institutions' websites. About 36.21 percent of the respondents had not contributed to any type of repository, while 25.94 percent of respondents had contributed to their IR. A higher percentage (16.76 percent) of respondents felt it was an “easy and fast way to communicate research results”. The majority of the respondents, i.e. 113 (61.08 percent), were willing to deposit symposium/conference/seminar papers. The most important reason for contribution was found to be preservation of documents for the future. Peer review was very much acceptable as a quality control mechanism. More than half of the respondents (57.84 percent) wanted to provide open access without any barrier for their ideal repository.

NITLE News: CLIR and NITLE to Launch Digital Academic Publishing Program

Posted: 13 Feb 2012 12:57 PM PST

NITLE News: CLIR and NITLE to Launch Digital Academic Publishing Program
www.nitle.org
"The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) and the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education (NITLE) announce the formation of Anvil Academic, a digital publisher for the humanities. Anvil will focus on publishing new forms of scholarship that cannot be adequately conveyed in the traditional monograph. “Increasingly, research in the humanities is dependent on large data sets and involves sophisticated algorithms and visualizations in the execution of that research and in the construction of the products of scholarship. Anvil will capture the environment in which this research is conducted: a linked ecology of scholarly expression, data, and tools of analysis that will over time become itself a place for new knowledge discovery,” said CLIR President Chuck Henry. Works published through Anvil will be available through Creative Commons licenses on the Web and as apps on portable devices. The title production system will be developed jointly by NITLE and CLIR for use by other institutions, each of which would have the opportunity to publish under its own imprint. It is expected that Anvil will publish its first title in late 2012. All of Anvil’s scholarly works will conform to the standards and protocols articulated by the Digital Public Library of America; Anvil will also work closely with the technical requirements of Europeana and Open Access Publishing in the European Network (OAPEN) guidelines...."
