"In a blog posted on April Fool's Day, Google announced a new feature to its Scholar service. This was no prank. It was the genuine debut of a new tool called Google Scholar Metrics....Another advantage of Scholar Metrics is its inclusion of web repositories like [RePEc,] the Social Science Research Network and arXiv, where authors can make manuscripts or published articles available to the web community at no cost to themselves or their readers. By making it into the top 10 of the h-index ranking, these repositories demonstrate the importance of open access and early views in strengthening a publication's sway...."

"Below I summarise six measures of journal impact: the impact factor (IF), 5-year IF, Google Scholar Metrics, SCImago Journal Rank (SJR), Source Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP) and Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) ranking. As part of the research for this post I have found out the metrics (except 5-year IF) for a sample of 97 of the higher-impact biomedical journals and put them into a Google Docs spreadsheet, which can be viewed here (or on Google Docs directly here)...."

The goal of re3data.org is to create a global registry of research data repositories. The registry will cover research data repositories from different academic disciplines. re3data.org will present repositories for the permanent storage and access of data sets to researchers, funding bodies, publishers and scholarly institutions. In the course of this mission re3data.org aims to promote a culture of sharing, increased access and better visibility of research data.
