Tips from those who've mastered the art of taking tests

Whatever feelings you harbor toward formal testing, know there's no way to escape. There's always going to be another test. Thankfully there are ways to study harder and score better:

Start studying yesterday

If you haven't started yet, you're already behind. But always pace yourself. Cramming for five hours at a time is a good way to forget most of what you covered. Instead: study in smaller time chunks and do so more frequently.

Exercise before you study

Take a jog, ride a bike, or chase a squirrel. The movement will increase blood flow to your brain.

Study in different places

According to The New York Times, just switching study spots each time you study increases data retention.

Avoid "test stress syndrome"

Okay, that's not a real thing. We made it up. But test stress can have a real impact on your performance, so find ways to relax. Do a cartwheel. Snuggle a kitten. And above all else: sleep more.

Tip of the week
The Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale ranks 43 common stressors by the amount of stress they tend to cause.

According to this scale, Christmas is more stressful than a minor law violation. And marriage is significantly more stressful than the death of a close friend.
