Where does it go from here? The place of software in digital repositories

Edinburgh Research Archive, (25 Apr 2012)
Abstract: The open repositories community has made great strides in recent years in addressing interoperability, policy and providing the arguments for open access and sharing. One aspect of open research which has come to prominence is the importance of software as a fundamental part of reproducible research, which in turn raises issues around the preservation of software. In this short paper, I will describe some of the work that the Software Sustainability Institute (SSI) has been doing to address the structural and policy issues which currently present a barrier to the deposit and use of software in open repositories.

Open Access Survey - The Summary : Survey of Academic Attitudes towards Open Access and Institutional Repositories

Jyväskylä University Digital Archive, (27 Apr 2012)
The University of Jyväskylä aims to be an institution advancing free scholarly information. To support this the Rector has recommended researchers, starting from the beginning of 2011, to save the final draft (aka post-print) files of their research articles in TUTKA register at the same time when recording the relating data. By the end of the year 2011 was seen that only 200 articles had been posted. It became necessary to find out what researchers generally think about the Open Access issues. The results indicate that Open Access is received very positively amont the researchers. OA thinking is not, however, reflected as strong in researcher's own publishing activity. It is obvious that all further information about the matter is necessary.

Use the link above to access the full text article from the Proceedings of the 55th Annual Meeting of the ISSS (International Society for the Systems Sciences). The abstract reads as follows: “The Open Access Movement is promising to grant universal unrestricted access to the knowledge and data outputs of publicly funded research. However, a systematic review of publicly funded projects in the systems engineering domain reveals such policy has had limited uptake. This paper presents the rationale methodology and preliminary results for this research.” The introduction provides the following additional information: “Despite the availability of good practices and no shortage of publicly available knowledge sharingtools and platforms, much knowledge produced by publicly funded research is still not shared, or only notionally shared, and there is no indication that the uptake of OpenAccess policies is actually monitored by anyone at any level. The research aims to: [1] identify what policies and practices regulate the explicit sharing of knowledge generated by publicly funded research in the UK. [2] evaluate to what extent, and via which mechanisms and behaviours, the adoption of OA policies and knowledge sharing artefacts and processes are adopted in the UK systems engineering research today.”
