Open Access Principles and Open Access Practice Posted: 11 Nov 2011 05:12 AM PST Open Access Archivangelism, (11 Nov 2011) In 2006, Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM) became the 1st North American University to sign the Berlin Declaration on Open Access. Since then, thirty two more North American Universities have so far followed suit. But not all of the signatories have yet mandated Open Access -- and that's really the only thing that counts. The rest is just apple-pie approbation in principle, until and unless it is put into practice, as spelled out in the Berlin Roadmap (adopted at Berlin 3 at the University of Southampton in 2005). |
Posted: 10 Nov 2011 12:30 PM PST www.marketwatch.com "New England Biolabs (NEB), in its continuing commitment to open access science, announces Polbase, a new, free and open database covering DNA polymerase biochemistry, genetics and structural biology. Inspired by REBASE (the Restriction Enzyme Database, also developed and maintained by NEB), Polbase summarizes the information that exists in the extensive body of polymerase literature, making it easy for researchers to interrogate and use. Polbase can be accessed at http://polbase.neb.com ...." |
Why The Internet of Things Will Be Open - Open Enterprise Posted: 10 Nov 2011 12:05 PM PST blogs.computerworlduk.com "One prediction that I feel confident about making is that if the Internet takes off, it will be based on open standards. Even more than the Internet, the Internet of things will have such a huge number of companies involved that it will be impossible for any one of them to impose a proprietary standard. I suspect, too, that alongside open standards, open source will also be hugely important in this area for a couple of reasons...." |

What happens when you tweet an Open Access Paper Posted: 10 Nov 2011 08:20 AM PST Melissa Terras' Blog, (07 Nov 2011) "So a few weeks ago, I tweeted and posted about this paper....I thought it worth revisiting the results of this. Is it worth me digging out the full text, running the gamut with the UCL repository, and trying to spend the time putting my previous research online? Is Open Access a gamble that pays - and if so, in what way? Prior to me blogging and tweeting about the paper, it got downloaded twice (not by me). The day I tweeted and blogged it, it immediately got 140 downloads...." |

I have lots of things ready to go and in the pipeline - which gives me, I reckon, at least one thing to talk about a week on here for the next academic year. I'm also feeding back usability issues to them (like, NO, dont delete the conference paper just because I published a paper in a journal with the same title! YES thats me in that record, even though my name isn't capitalised. NO, Melody Terras who works in Social Sciences at the University of the West of Scotland IS NOT ME)...." |
