Introduction
What's on Your Mind?
Holly Ross, Executive Director, NTEN

They say doing something twice makes it tradition. Well, this is our third Member Appreciation Month newsletter, so it looks like you'll see lots more of these in the years to come.

It's one of my favorite editions each year because it's filled with what's on YOUR minds, without our editorial hand. And it looks like what's on your minds is marketing and social media!

Beyond that, there's a rich assortment if ideas and tips in this newsletter. Like the NTEN community itself, these posts are honest, helpful, and occasionally pretty darn funny.

And while we're on the topic of community, registration for the 2012 Nonprofit Technology Conference is now open! My favorite part of the NTC is the people, the collective energy the NTEN community creates when we're together in one place, talking about ways we can use technology to further our missions and change the world.

I hope you'll be able to join us, Quipi!

Best,
Holly

Twelve Ways You Can Make Your Campaign Stronger
By Farra Trompeter, Vice President, Big Duck

As a nonprofit fundraiser, this is my favorite time of year. Study after study shows how most nonprofits see their biggest influx of donations — especially those that come in via email/web/social media — during the last few months, if not days, of the year.

We've developed a handy list of twelve ingredients for successful multi-channel or integrated fundraising campaigns.

Cloud Security: Don't Confuse Security and Control
By Tal Frankfurt, CEO, Cloud for Good

Recently, I received an urgent call from the director of a small nonprofit organization.

I had spoken with her almost 6 months ago about the possibility of migrating their organization to the cloud. After our original conversation, she took my proposal to their board and the day after the board meeting she called and expressed some concerns.

The vast majority of their board members agreed that "the cloud is too dangerous, it is not secure." Instead of migrating, they bought additional servers and installed one of those client/server-based databases.

Then their region experienced some serious thunder storms.

Podcasting as Digital Storytelling: Behind the Scenes Look
By Deborah Elizabeth Finn, Strategist & Consultant>

In its most rudimentary form, a podcast is simply a digital audio recording delivered to listeners who can hear it at their convenience.

But a podcast can be a vehicle for storytelling, if you make the effort to infuse it with a narrative.

HOW-TO
C + C + C = C? The Secret to Viral Marketing
By Darian Rodriguez Heyman, Founder, Social Media for Nonprofits

379 is my new magic number. That's the number of "yes" votes we got for our proposed NTC session in just a couple short weeks—apparently the most ever.

Seriously, though? Is "Top Ten Social Media Fundraising Tips" such a compelling topic that droves of nptechies turn out to cast their ballot or is something else afoot? Although my ego would prefer otherwise, I doubt it.

So what gives, and how can you crush our record when you propose a workshop next year?

The answer is simple, yet confounding.

30 Super Useful Nonprofit Hashtags
By Kerri Karvetski, Owner, Company K Media

Twitter really shines as a communications tool when you use it with hashtags. Hashtags are words or phrases prefixed with the hash symbol (#) – #justinbeiber for example.

Hashtags have two major benefits – they help your tweets get found (by people who are searching for your subject), and they help you find good content.

Use a hashtag that's popular and meaningful to your interests – like #nptech, which stands for nonprofit tech – and you'll tap a powerful vein of conversation and learning.

Here's a list of 30 incredibly useful nonprofit hashtags.

Technology Trends for Nonprofits in 2011
By Tonia Zampieri, Sales & Marketing Manager, LoyaltyClicks at Smart Online

[Ed. Note: A year ago, Tonia wrote a piece predicting what would be important to nonprofits this year. We thought we'd give you the chance to evaluate how she did – and to let you tell us what's going to happen in 2012.]

How should nonprofits position themselves in this ever changing world of technology? How important is it for them to understand and keep up with the new trends in technology? To answer these questions and more, we used this last quarter of 2010 to try and unravel the 'Technology Trends for Nonprofits' in 2011.

Things We Like

A monthly roundup of our favorite nonprofit tech resources and other goodies. Read more posts on our blog.
  1. If you've been at a loss for what to do with QR codes, J. C. Penney, of all places, had a fanastic idea: link them to custom recorded messages. We can almost visualize the code that would let you add that to your thank you letters this year end. Now, if somebody would just write it...
  2. Have you googled "do a barrel roll" yet?
  3. We're stoked that NTEN Member Humane Society of the United States recently welcomed their 1,000,000th Facebook fan – and that they've turned the milestone into an integrated campaign to get even more.
  4. No surprise, then, that they already have a Page on Google+. Want one of your own? John Haydon made a stellar video walkthrough.
  5. And don't forget about LinkedIn!
  6. Tired of using the BCC field, but lacking the funds to subscribe to an email marketing platform? Emma is giving away 25 accounts to small nonprofits – for life!
  7. Random metrics.
  8. Christopher S. Penn believes your content needs to make you do at least one of three things: laugh, learn, or love.
  9. We agree! In the interest of that first metric, we can't not link to "Catvertising". We're still chuckling – although we're disappointed we didn't come up with this ourselves.
  10. But maybe we should be linking to pictures of babies instead. Longtime NTEN Member Katya Andresen wrote up an overview of seven things she's learned about neuromarketing, including the finding that babies make people more altruistic. [Ed. note: Even more than an albino porcupine?]
  11. We're not sure if that applies to giant Lego babies, which may or may not wash up on a beach near you. Really, we couldn't make this stuff up. The world is a wonderful place.
  12. Incidentally, if you didn't click that last link, you're missing out. Don't: here it is again.
